The fantastic world of Rick Riordan's book series comes to life once again - this time as a show on Disney+!

In »Percy Jackson and the Olympians«, young demigods with special powers get caught between the frontlines. The story focuses on 12-year-old Percy who finds out that he's the son of the mighty Poseidon. Subsequently he ends up in a camp with other demigods. The teenagers collide with dark monsters and supernatural dangers and have to fight them with their newly discovered powers.

Percy Jackson is on a particularly difficult mission: He has to find the god Zeus’ master bolt and bring it back to stop an all devastating war. Percy's friends Annabeth and Grover, who share a similar fate, help him on his journey. Together on this adventure they find their place in this new world.

The series is based on the popular novels by author Rick Riordan and it's full of secrets from Greek mythology. Fans of the »Percy Jackson« universe and fantasy lovers will be glad to hear that the series is starting today on Disney+. The first season includes eight episodes, two of which are already available today. The rest will follow weekly until the final episode airs at the end of January.

»Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom« is currently hitting the big screens and is heralding the cinematic end of the DC Extended Universe.

After his defeat at the end of the first movie in 2018, Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) is out for revenge in this sequel and with the Black Trident, he has a silver bullet up his sleeve. In order to save the kingdom of Atlantis, Aquaman (Jason Momoa) has to ask his brother Orm (Patrick Wilson) for help.

Between the end of the DCEU and a seemingly turbulent production we are a bit skeptical about what we can expect from this film. According to current projections and first reviews it doesn’t look too good for »Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom«. That’s unfortunate if you consider the apparent future of the new DCU, which is supposed to launch on the silver screen with »Superman: Legacy« in 2025. At the moment, it looks like James Gunn won’t bring back Momoa’s Aquaman into the DC Universe. We definitely would have hoped to see a more befitting farewell for the King of the Sea.

60 years ago, »The Pink Panther« had its premiere in Germany. Blake Edwards' gangster comedy marked the international breakthrough for British actor Peter Sellers. His inspector Jacques Clouseau became an immortal cinematic icon. No less emblematic were the animated title sequence, which led to its own cartoon series, and the theme song by Henry Mancini. Plas Johnson's saxophone solo is burned deep into our ears and collective memory and makes you want to pay the clumsy inspector a visit again.

For a period of almost 20 years, the manufacturer Hot Toys was considered the gold standard when it came to 1/6 collectible figures. The quality of the “Hot Toys figures” set the bar, the name said it all and they defined what all manufacturers had to measure themselves against.

When Queen Studios expanded into the 1/6 market with their brand INART, Hot Toys’ place at the top of the figures Olympus didn’t seem as certain anymore. Hot Toys had released a number of Heath Ledger Joker figures over the years and continued to improve them. INART then went one step further and announced their version of the Joker, which clearly outperformed the Hot Toys figures with a deluxe edition with two figures with implanted hair, but also cost more than 1,000 €.

With JND STUDIOS, another high-end manufacturer is entering the ring. JND have previously dabbled in the realm of hyper-realistic 1/3 scale statues and are now moving into 1/6 scale posable figures with their new KOJUN Works line. And - what a surprise - they also chose the Heath Ledger Joker as their first figure: magnetic movable eyes, implanted hair, a head with silicone skin, no visible joints on the neck, movable silicone fingers ... The slimmed down version A without many accessories would be around 1,200 €. The Deluxe Version C (which is limited to 500 pieces only) with two bodies and heads was available for around 2,000 €. We as retailer would have access also to a slightly simpler version B that would also land above the 2,000 € border. You can check out the product video from JND Studios here:

That's a lot of money - and actually twice the price of the deluxe edition of the INART figure. In comparison, the brand-new Joker versions by Hot Toys (as DX32 or even in the "Artisan Edition") are ranging way below that.

Who wants to invest so much money? How much is this hyperrealism worth to us? There may certainly be some collectors who strive for the ultimate authenticity. Others will be more than happy with what INART offers, especially since they also provide a beautiful diorama base. And others will stick with Hot Toys and don't need any higher level. After all, it all started with toys and we've already come a long way to Hot Toys and still got affordable, if not exactly cheap, collectibles.

But new technologies also raise questions. How durable and long-lasting is the silicone skin? How well (or poorly) does it age? What about discoloration? When does material fatigue occur in the fingers? All questions that only time will answer. And do you really need all these gimmicks if the figure spends a life in the display case and doesn't have much opportunity to demonstrate its features?

We as a reseller located at the other end of the world are taking - at least for the moment - the following position: since there are of course no "long-term studies" yet on these new (and by the way patented) technologies and material evolutions, skepticism and the fear for a financial dilemma predominate, to be honest. We unfortunately have too many bad experiences when it comes to the really unsatisfying service behaviours from most of the manufacturers, especially regarding quality issues or reclaims. With such an expensive and very special premium product for us the ice, with all the contingencies involved, is really too thin.

What is your point of view? Have you been fully blown away by these innovations by JND and you definately have to get this Joker - or do you rather share our thoughts?

Today it will be gloomy in theaters because 2 exciting thrillers are hitting the big screen.

For the action fans among you »Silent Night« might be worth a visit to the cinema. It already attracted some attention in advance thanks to one special gimmick: There is no dialogue in the film! But what is it actually about?

Everything begins on a Christmas Eve that ends in a catastrophe. Brian Godlock's son is killed in the cross fire of two rivaling gangs and is wounded fatally. When Brian (Joel Kinnaman) tries to follow the culprits he himself is seriously injured. He survives but loses his voice due to a bullet in his throat. Henceforth, he seeks revenge ...

The movie was directed by John Woo, who became one of the biggest action directors in Hollywood with works like »Face/Off«. Whether he'll also be able to convince us without any dialogue with pure action remains to be seen. We are definitely curious!

If you prefer mystery and subtle suspense, »Eileen« might be the right fit for you. The film tells the story of the protagonist of the same name (played by Thomasin McKenzie), who languishes as a secretary in a juvenile prison in the 1960s and likes to escape into her own fantasies. When the young woman meets the mysterious Rebecca (Anne Hathaway), a new colleague at the prison, she's immediately fascinated by her and the two become friends. What Eileen doesn't know is that her new confidant is keeping a dark secret ... 

The film is based on the novel of the same title by author Ottessa Moshfegh, who was also involved in writing the script. The movie already premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year. Now we can finally watch it in the cinema and we're especially excited to see the duo McKenzie and Hathaway.

So after 30 years, Detective Axel Foley will be back - and with him his buddies Rosewood and Taggart! Harold Faltermeyer's epic Axel F theme alone rocks in the trailer, but also the rest looks damn cool. We are totally excited and looking forward to it!

Yesterday Warner Bros. released a new trailer for »Dune: Part 2«. After the first two, which were shown in May and June, this film preview also impressed us with its visual power and atmosphere and once again makes us want to see the sequel to Denis Villeneuve's desert epic from 2021. And after the planned cinematic release at the end of 2023 was postponed, a new release date has now been confirmed for March 2024. We're really looking forward to it - what about you?

Today we have two streaming tips for you. Both are family films - but definitely not films for the whole family.

The apocalyptic thriller »Leave the World Behind« is available on Netflix. The New York couple Amanda (played by Julia Roberts) and Clay Sandford (played by Ethan Hawke) spontaneously decide to take a short vacation with their two children at the coast and rent a holiday home on Long Island. As soon as they get there, some strange things start to happen. The television no longer works and the internet, telephone and navigation system fail as well. In the middle of the night, G. H. Scott and his daughter Ruth (played by Mahershala Ali and Myha'la) appear at the door. G. H. claims to be the owner of the house and demands entry, because there has been a cyber attack in New York. There is a lot of mistrust between the two families and conflicts are inevitable.

The film is well acted across the board and the characters are pleasingly multidimensional. The camera work is superb and the story is told in an exciting way. The characters’ isolation and uncertainty are almost physically tangible and as viewers we ask ourselves how we would cope with such a situation. The film certainly drags on a bit at times and the ending isn't 100 percent satisfactory - nevertheless, »Leave the World Behind« is finally a Netflix film that's worth watching.

Our second tip takes us to Paramount+, where the Danish film »Speak No Evil« can be streamed. The Danish couple Louise and Bjørn and their little daughter Agnes meet Patrick and Karin and their son Abel from the Netherlands while on vacation in Italy. Weeks after their return they receive a postcard with an invitation to Holland. At first they’re unsure whether to accept it - after all, they hardly know each other. But what could go wrong? It could turn out to be a really nice weekend. However, during the visit, personal boundaries are violated again and again. Louise and Bjørn accept it at first, civilized and in need of harmony as they are. After all, you’d want to remain polite...

The film is a slow burner that increasingly turns into a horror film. Precisely because the Danish couple's behavior is so understandable, »Speak No Evil« stays in your mind long after it’s over. It’s anything but a feel-good film, but very worth seeing - a mean little film that kicks you in the stomach.
