In West African Yoruba mythology, Ogun is not only the god of iron but also the first king of the legendary city of Ife. His weapons are not made of ordinary metal: they obey his will, taking on any form he commands and remaining loyal to a single master. Only his magical shield lies beyond his direct control. Yet he does not need to wield it himself. It protects him from grave harm and reveals, in the darkest moments of battle, the knowledge he needs.
