This nostalgic scene was captured for us by Marco, and he got quite creative in the process:
"This photo is a typical example of how I assemble my scenes and combine toy worlds. While two (or three, if you count the rubber ducky) NECA figures serve as the protagonists, the rest of the arrangement consists of a hodgepodge of toys from my stash. The bathtub is from Steffi, the sink from Barbie, the shower from Schleich, the pirate ship from Playmobil, and the toiletries, including the toothbrushes, are from Sylvanian Families. The bathroom wall is a white laminated wooden board that I found on the street sometime ago. The small handheld mirror on the wall originally came from my grandmother's pill bottle. To get Ernie's bath really lathering up, I used foam soap – my absolute insider tip for simulating bath foam in action figure proportions."

It quickly became clear that the eponymous phone would ring again, which it now does in »Black Phone 2«, coming to theaters this October. The fact that the Grabber was dead at the end of the first film doesn't stop him from returning, and so Ethan Hawke reprises his role as the child murderer. The kids from the first film, played by Mason Thames and Madeleine McGraw, are also back and have grown a bit. Whether we're in for another thrilling and scary horror film or whether the Grabber is perhaps just a cash grabber, we can't yet decide based on the second trailer:

Episodic storytelling is firmly established in all famous detective stories, from Sherlock Holmes to Hercule Poirot, from Philip Marlowe to Columbo, and this naturally also applies to sleuth Benoit Blanc. And so, mastermind Rian Johnson once again challenges Daniel Craig as the master detective in another star-studded murder mystery. Let's stay with Netflix: The streaming provider is continuing its successful »Monster« series about real-life serial killers. After Jeffrey Dahmer and the Menendez brothers, the third season focuses on Ed Gein. His crimes have already inspired horror classics such as »Psycho« and »The Texas Chainsaw Massacre«.
Looking at the poster featuring the chainsaw-wielding Gein, the criticism of the romanticization of serial killers is certainly not entirely misplaced. Voices grew loud especially from those close to the victims, after the first seasons. Season 3 will certainly face the same criticism. »Monster: The Story of Ed Gein« drops on Netflix on October 3rd. And last but not least, a Netflix miniseries has piqued our interest. »Last Samurai Standing« is a Japanese live-action series adapted from the Japanese manga series of the same name, which in turn is based on a novel by Shogo Imamura.
In 1878, 292 samurai gather for a battle royale, lured by a 100 billion yen prize. The survivor that makes it to Tokyo wins. Shujiro Saga (Jun'ichi Okada) joins the race to save his ailing family. A dangerous game of survival unfolds on the journey.
The first two episodes of the series will premiere at the 30th Busan International Film Festival on September 18, 2025. The six episodes of the series will be available to stream worldwide on Netflix on November 13, 2025. The trailer whets our appetite for flashing katanas:

Twenty years ago yesterday, the stop-motion film »Corpse Bride« premiered at the Venice International Film Festival. The work by Tim Burton and Mike Johnson is based on an ancient Russian legend and has become a modern classic of animated film.

In the Victorian era, the shy Victor is about to marry the wealthy and graceful Victoria. But an unfortunate coincidence throws everything into disarray: Through a mishap, he awakens the mysterious corpse bride, Emily, who falls head over heels in love with him. Now Victor faces a difficult decision: Should he remain in the gray, sober world of the living or choose the surprisingly vibrant and colorful realm of the dead? Torn between his affection for Victoria and his loyalty to the lovable, albeit decayed, Emily, Victor must ultimately let his heart decide...

In the original, Victor and Emily are voiced by Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter.

Twenty-five years ago today, Christopher Nolan's »Memento« premiered at the Venice International Film Festival. With his second feature film, Nolan made his first major statement and made it unmistakably clear that he's a filmmaker to be reckoned with in the future.

The protagonist, Leonard, played by Guy Pearce, and his wife Natalie are attacked by burglars in their home. Natalie is raped and murdered. Leonard manages to overpower and kill one intruder, but is knocked down by the second man, suffering a severe head injury and, as a result, anterograde amnesia. From this point on, his short-term memory is destroyed. He is unable to form new memories. Everything that happens to him will be forgotten within minutes.

Leonard wants to find his wife's murderer. He creates a memory system of notes and Polaroids. He has everything that seems particularly important to him tattooed on his skin.

The film's highlight is its structure. There are two narrative threads: One, shot in black and white, moves forward chronologically, while the second reverses the order of the scenes. It begins at the end and tells the story backwards.

The whole thing is more than just a formal gimmick, because we as viewers are placed in Leonard's shoes. Like him, we know nothing about the past and what events led to the current situation. Who is the person opposite him, can he trust them? The whole thing is incredibly suspenseful, constantly twisting our brains. We know the other characters, like John Edward "Teddy" Gammell (Joe Pantoliano) or Natalie (Carrie-Anne Moss), from future scenes, and we have to put everything we learn about the past into the correct order.

Mick remembers: "When I first saw »Memento«, I was incredibly impressed by its asynchronous narrative. I saw the film with two friends, and afterward, we went to our local pub for a few beers, and spent half the night discussing it. I've seen many great works since then, but hardly any film experience has thrilled and captivated me as much as »Memento«. I've put the movie on my rewatch list for this weekend.The DVD, by the way, contains a gimmick that allows you to play the scenes in chronological order."

»Welcome to Derry« is just around the corner. Starting October 26th, Pennywise will once again instill fear in us. But long before Bill Skarsgård's portrayal in the series and the two »It« films, another Pennywise was already causing trouble. Of course, we're talking about Tim Curry in the 1990 two-part TV series. His portrayal of the character garnered enormous popularity among the coulrophobic community back then.

We've been longing for a 1/6 scale Pennywise based on Tim Curry's performance for a long time, until Sideshow finally answered our plea. The horror clown has also moved into Mick's house and has been terrifying the children's figures in his collection ever since. »The Conjuring: Last Rites« opens in theaters today. Mick took the opportunity to watch it at a preview screening last night. Here's his take on the film:

When »The Conjuring« hit theaters in 2013, it was a real breath of fresh air for the classic haunted house subgenre. Australian director James Wan demonstrated a keen sense of timing and effective jump scares. The movie became a huge hit and launched its own franchise with sequels and spin-offs featuring horror characters like »Annabelle« and »The Nun«. »The Conjuring 2« also directed by Wan, maintained the high quality and perhaps even surpassed it. »The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It« however, disappointed me across the board.

My expectations for »The Conjuring: Last Rites« weren't particularly high, largely due to the fact that it was directed by Michael Chaves. He had previously delivered films such as the aforementioned third part of the series, as well as »The Curse of La Llorona«, and »The Nun II«, which must be considered among the weakest works in the franchise. »The Conjuring: Last Rites« is his best work to date, but still falls far short of the first two films.

The story consists of two narrative strands. The first focuses entirely on the Warrens and begins with a flashback to the day their daughter Judy was born. The main part of the action then takes place in 1986. The Warrens have largely withdrawn from the demon-hunting business and only occasionally give lectures. Judy has grown into a young woman. Like her mother Lorraine, she has a gift for perceiving the paranormal and has recently been increasingly plagued by disturbing visions. We also meet her boyfriend Tony Spera, who accompanies Judy to Ed's birthday party.

The second story focuses on the case of the eight-member Smurl family, who have been confronted with increasingly frightening apparitions in their house for some time.

The two narrative threads only come together relatively late. At 136 minutes, the film is simply far too long. I realized that I had little interest in the Warrens' family life, even though the actors, especially Vera Farmiga as Lorraine Warren and Mia Tomlinson as Judy, give it their all. Patrick Wilson remains somewhat lackluster as Ed Warren. Newcomer Ben Hardy, as Tony Spera, knows how to enrich the story with his acting. There are a few truly beautiful emotional family moments here and there, but I didn't find it particularly gripping. Judy's visions, which primarily provide the impetus for a few jump scares, often seem a bit random, for example, when good old Annabelle is once again called upon to provide some scares.

The events at the Smurl house are a bit more exciting, although unfortunately everything remained very superficial, and I couldn't really connect with the characters. The ghost and demon story is simply too bland and interchangeable. What the film clearly lacks is a worthy final enemy, like the demon Valak. I could see all of the jump scares coming from a mile away. I had more fun watching other moviegoers jump in my immediate vicinity.

So the whole thing turns into a ghost train ride that unfortunately lasts far too long, but doesn't offer anything new narratively. The main story arc is also predictable from the start. Aside from its jump scares, the film doesn't have much to offer, and so it bored me for long stretches. A small highlight was a nice scene with many cameos towards the end.

This year, in particular, has once again demonstrated how creatively the horror genre can be used with a multitude of films – »Sinners«, »The Ugly Stepsister«, »Bring Her Back«, »Weapons«, »Together«, just to name a few. In comparison, the fourth »Conjuring« film seems a bit dated. Even though »The Conjuring« was fresh in 2013 and jump scares weren't quite as worn out, repeating the formula in 2025 no longer appeals to me.

Don't get me wrong, »The Conjuring: Last Rites« isn't a bad movie, and the actors' performances are also impressive. Vera Farmiga and Mia Tomlinson really give it their all, but it just couldn't captivate me. However, if you enjoy ghost train rides and being scared by loud noises in the cinema, you can definitely have a fun experience – I've even heard people enthusiastically responding to the film.

By now, we're used to having to wait several years for a new season or sequel. »28 Years Later«, which drew horror fans to theaters this year, was also a late sequel – coming out 18 and 23 years, respectively, after its post-apocalyptic predecessors »28 Weeks Later« (2007) and »28 Days Later« (2002). It's all the more gratifying that we won't have to wait long for the next film in the series. »28 Years Later: The Bone Temple« will be released on the big screen in January, 2026! And just a few hours ago, we got a first taste:

The extremely atmospheric trailer has a similar pull to the preview for »28 Years Later« and is really making us want to see the film! We'll be sitting in the cinema in early 2026 to watch director Nia DaCosta continue the story. »28 Years Later: The Bone Temple« is the second installment in a planned sequel trilogy written by Alex Garland – hopefully, part 3, again directed by Danny Boyle, won't be too long in coming either!

The teaser trailer for »Bugonia« already thrilled us two months ago. With the sci-fi comedy, which premiered a few days ago at the Venice Film Festival, Yorgos Lanthimos delivers a remake of the South Korean film »Save the Green Planet!« starring Jesse Plemons and Emma Stone. The new trailer particularly highlights Stone's performance, who not only shines as an actress but has also undergone a remarkable transformation for the role:

The horror thriller »Bone Lake«, which premiered at a film festival last year, takes us to a remote lake. Sage and Diego plan to spend a few romantic days there together. In »Dead Winter«, fisherwoman Babs, played by Emma Thompson, simply wants to fulfill her late husband's last wish and scatter his ashes in the snowy wilderness of Minnesota. There, however, she witnesses the kidnapping of a young woman and sets out to rescue the girl on her own, far from any civilization. The film will be released in American theaters in just a few weeks.

»Play Dirty« starring Mark Wahlberg premieres on Amazon Prime on October 1st. After the trailer, which features some cool lines and plenty of gunplay, we're still not quite sure whether we're in for an entertaining gangster tale or just generic content. The Indian film »Bāhubali: The Epic« by S.S. Rajamouli, who became known to a wider audience worldwide with his work »RRR«, combines »Bāhubali: The Beginning« (2015) and »Bāhubali 2: The Conclusion« (2017) into a new epic cut. Jalmari Helander's Finnish film »Sisu« toured various festival screens in 2022 and 2023, balancing the fine line between bloody exploitation and almost cartoonish over-the-top exaggeration, becoming a true crowd-pleaser. In the early decades of the 20th century, mainstream audiences were not yet ready for horror, fantasy, and science fiction stories that pushed the boundaries of imagination. Writers inclined toward such genres had to publish their work in specialized pulp magazines. Among the most notable of these was Weird Tales, a publication that featured authors such as H. P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith, and Robert E. Howard, who would later (some only posthumously) gain remarkable fame. 

Robert E. Howard stood out in particular for his wide range of interests. In addition to horror stories, classic westerns, and pirate adventures, he had a deep fascination with various types of warriors. His most iconic creation is undoubtedly Conan the Cimmerian. Howard portrayed Conan as a true superhuman with not only exceptional combat skills but also remarkable intellectual prowess.

Today, most people associate the name Conan with the 1982 film »Conan the Barbarian«, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Beyond the literary source material, the film's visual style drew heavily on the epic paintings of illustrator Frank Frazetta. His work is characterized by dizzying dynamism, heroic poses, and raw masculine power. Frazetta's piece titled »Conan the Barbarian« was used as the cover for the 1966 Conan story collection »Conan the Adventurer«.

Frazetta gave the warrior and his world a visual identity that continues to shape the Conan mythos to this day and will likely continue to influence future adaptations. Toyplosion 2025 in Castrop-Rauxel was once again a real highlight! The »Most Powerful Retro Toyshow« opened its doors for the third time (that's right, "doors," because this time it expanded to two halls) – and we had the great pleasure of being there again with our own booth. A huge thank you to all the visitors, friends, and collectors who stopped by – and of course, to the professional, tireless organizers for this fantastic event! 🙌

Today we have five trailers for you that have piqued our interest. Besides what these trailers tell us and what they offer visually, it's the people in front of and behind the camera that really grab our attention.

»Ballad of a Small Player« is the new film by Austrian-Swiss director Edward Berger. His work »All Quiet on the Western Front« was nominated for nine Oscars and won four of the coveted Academy Awards. Berger's next film, »Conclave« was also nominated multiple times at various festivals and won numerous awards, including one of the Golden Boys. The new movie will have a short theatrical release starting October 16th in select cinemas, but it will already be available on Netflix from October 29. It's clear that the streaming provider would like to see the film in the running for the Oscars. »Ballad of a Small Player« features a top-notch cast, including Colin Farrell and Tilda Swinton. The setting is the gambling paradise of Macau. What impresses us most about Berger's film is its elegant cinematography. See for yourselves:

In the 8-part Netflix miniseries »Black Rabbit« we also encounter playing cards and debt. Jude Law plays the owner of a trendy New York restaurant. When he lets his somewhat chaotic brother, played by Jason Bateman, back into his life, he opens the door to escalating dangers that threaten to bring down everything he has built. The film adaptation of the bestselling novel of the same name, »The Woman in Cabin 10« entices us with a beautiful mystery story. The setting is a luxury yacht. Keira Knightley plays journalist Laura Blacklock. She witnesses the titular woman from cabin 10 being thrown overboard at night. Only, it turns out that the cabin is neither occupied nor is anyone missing. Blacklock's investigation puts her own life in danger. In addition to Keira Knightley, the cast includes Guy Pearce (»L.A. Confidential«), Hannah Waddingham (»Ted Lasso«), and David Morrissey (»The Walking Dead«), among others. The film will be shown from October 10 on Netflix. Get your murder mystery vibes here:

In »Good Boy«, we meet a very special lead. The trailer quotes Indiewire magazine: "One of the most emotive actors of his generation – regardless of species." The horror thriller stars Indy, director Ben Leonberg's dog.
Indy moves into a rural estate with his owner, Todd, but discovers supernatural forces lurking in the shadows. When dark entities threaten his human companion, the brave pup must take on the fight. This is a completely different perspective, one that will surely open the hearts of more than just dog owners. The film opens in the US on October 3. The trashy sword-and-sorcery cult classic »Deathstalker«, originally released in 1983, is getting a reboot – and the absurdity of the original seems to be reflected in the new version. Not only do the look and feel of the trailer perfectly capture the 80s vibe, but the cast also promises a great deal of fun. The lead role is played by martial artist and stuntman Daniel Bernhardt, best known for the »Bloodsport«, »Matrix«, and »John Wick« franchises. Comedian Patton Oswalt also makes an appearance, while director Steven Kostanski, known for his low-budget horror comedies, was at the helm. Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash contributed both as a producer and as part of the soundtrack. The film premiered on August 15 at the Locarno Film Festival and is set to hit US theaters on October 10.

In recent years, we've witnessed a renaissance of beat 'em ups and 2D brawlers. Whether it's »Streets of Rage 4« (2020) or »Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge« (2022), it's clear that players have a strong appetite for wild, pixel-style brawling action. Just in time for Halloween this year, even our favorite splatter clown Art (»Terrifier«) is set to get his very own fighting game.

At the recently held Gamescom, it was announced that He-Man and his allies will soon be fighting against Skeletor and his minions in a brand-new 2D brawler. In »He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: Dragon Pearl of Destruction«, players will step into the roles of He-Man, Teela, Man-At-Arms, and others, testing each character's unique weapons and combat styles while battling through twelve distinct levels to save Eternia from doom!

The trailer already promises everything MOTU fans have come to love and celebrate: authentic 1980s aesthetics, lovingly crafted animations, and stunning assets that look as though they were lifted straight from the classic MOTU TV series. A specific release date has not yet been announced. »He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: Dragon Pearl of Destruction« is slated for release on PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam.

There's exciting news about the upcoming Gollum film! »The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum«, the current working title, is scheduled to hit theaters in December 2027. As already announced, for the film, produced by Peter Jackson, Andy Serkis will not only slip into the motion capture suit again and bring Gollum to life, but will also serve as director.

On August 16 and 17, the »For the Love of Fantasy« convention took place in London. Among the stars from the »Lord of the Rings« trilogy in attendance was Ian McKellen. During a panel, the 86-year-old actor confirmed that he will reprise his role as Gandalf in »The Hunt for Gollum« and further hinted at Elijah Wood playing Frodo Baggins once again.

In the past, Orlando Bloom (Legolas), Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn), Cate Blanchett (Galadriel), and John Rhys-Davies (Gimli) have also expressed interest in participating. It's quite possible that we'll see more old acquaintances again.

Speaking of old acquaintances, our friends at Weta will also be taking care of the special effects again (and will surely provide us with new Middle-earth collectibles as well 🙂).

The eagerly awaited second season of »Peacemaker«, arguably one of the best superhero series around, premieres today.

James Gunn has repeatedly proven that he has a knack for quirky heroes. What makes his scripts so unique is the delicate balance of raw action, and a keen eye for the absurd, paired with anarchic humor, an unerring sense of timing and the right choice of music. His stories are always imbued with sympathy and a great deal of heart for the characters. As with »Guardians of the Galaxy«, we can sense Gunn's love for his fucked-up heroes in »Peacemaker«, and that translates to us as well. In season 2, the master directed episodes 1, 6, and 8.

In 2021, »Nobody« became a surprise hit. Always looking for a sure bet, »Nobody 2« is hitting theaters right now – what worked once is sure to fill the box office a second time.

Bob Odenkirk once again plays Hutch Mansell, a suburban bore with a history as a hitman. With his wife Becca (Connie Nielsen), the kids, and Grandpa David (Christopher Lloyd), Hutch travels to a small, run-down resort for a nice family vacation. Naturally, trouble's not far away, de-escalation unfortunately doesn't work, and Hutch finds himself tangling with crime boss Lendina (Sharon Stone).

The success of the »Fallout« series adaptation last year was a very positive surprise – especially how well the production team around sci-fi masters Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy (»Westworld«) seemed to understand the source material and the retrofuturistic dystopian world of the games. The main characters Lucy MacLean (Ella Purnell), Maximus (Aaron Moten), and especially The Ghoul (Walton Goggins) radiated a great deal of charisma and immersion as well. 

The series has been named alongside »The Last of Us« as one of the best game adaptations. So it was no coincidence that Amazon announced a second season only a few days after the premiere. This one will already launch on December 17 – an unusually fast turnaround for a show of this production scale – and yesterday the first teaser trailer was released, already promising more of what made the first season so great:

"Do we have a team nearby?"
"Yes, fortunately. The S.P.A.C.E Crew has been rehearsing this emergency for weeks!"

The transporter with emergency rations from Mattel, Mondo, Four Horsemen, NECA & Co. is packed. S.P.A.C.E Headquarters is on RED alert all week. Preparations are in full swing until we cover the mere 500 kilometers on Friday and travel with a host of old and new retro heroes into the eye of the storm for Toyplosion 3.2.
